ICA Speaks: Liz Deschenes

ICA Miami welcomes artist Liz Deschenes, whose work Shift/Rise #40 (2012) is featured in the museum’s permanent collection, for a virtual edition of ICA Speaks. This program is free to the public with RSVP, and requires a registered Zoom account to participate.

Over the last 20 years, Liz Deschenes has created a body of photographic work that explores light, material, and space. Rather than producing images, she explores the relationship between the material processes through which images are produced, the ways in which seeing is habituated, the history of the medium, and exhibition structures of presentation as a critical counterpoint to a world awash in media. This presentation will explore concepts central to the artist’s practice, as well as recent work.

Liz Deschenes (b. 1966, Boston, MA) lives and works in New York. Past solo exhibitions include the ICA, Boston (2016); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2014); MASSMoCA, North Adams (2015) and Secession, Vienna (2012-2013). Her work is part of the permanent public collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Le Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; The Art Institute of Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
